There is no one way to classify bracelets, because by their very nature they can be hard to describe and pin down. Perhaps the easiest way to classify bracelets is based on the material used in the band. Common materials used for bracelets include leather, rope, metal, fabric, chain, plastic, wood and a whole host of synthetic materials.

Another way to consider bracelets is by focusing on their gemstones. You can find bracelets that use pearls, diamonds, rubies, sapphire, emeralds or any other gemstones. Beads are also used to make bracelets, with a huge variety of bead types, such as glass, which can be used to subclassify bracelets.

Here is a list of some of the most popular and recognizable types of bracelets:

Bangles

Types of BraceletsBangles do not have clasps, nor do they have stretchable or flexible sections or pieces. Instead, bangles are designed to simply be slipped over the hand to be worn around the wrist. Sometimes you will see an incomplete bangle, which has a small opening around the inner wrist that makes it possible for the bracelet to be slipped on sideways, over the wrist. An incomplete bangle can be easier to stay in place.

Bangles can be thick or thin. Thin bangles are usually worn together, so that the wearer uses multiple bangles to make a fashion statement. Multiple bangles can be uniform, or they can vary in color and texture.

Charm Bracelets

Charm bracelets have one or more small charms attached to them. The charms are made separately and can be made of any kind of material, including gemstones, glass or metal. Charms are frequently made in different shapes that are significant to the owner. Charm bracelets often given as gifts and become an heirloom, since the charms are records of significant events in the family.

Charm bracelets are popular in part because they are great multi-year gifts. A new charm can be purchased every year to commemorate different events, such as graduations, marriages, children, or trips, to name a few. Although expensive charm bracelets made of luxury materials exist, many charm bracelets are inexpensive and allow the wearer to express different facets of his or her personality.

Chain Bracelets

Chain bracelets are made from chain links. The size of the links varies according to the tastes of the wearer, and so do the materials used to make the chain, and their shapes. The most common types of chain include:

Bead – Bead bracelets are very much like chain bracelets, which use a wire, cord, or string connecting the beads.

Box – Box, or “Venetian” chains are solid squares that look like connected boxes when they are connected to form a bracelet.

Byzantine – Byzantine chains are complex in structure and are almost rope-like or strand-like in appearance. True to their name, these bracelets tend to be ornate in their designs.

Mesh – Mesh chains are maid from the flexible material and are highly durable. They resemble chain links.

Rolo – Rolo chains use a symmetrical, round set of links which are joined together to create a cohesive look.

Rope – Rope chain bracelets use different kinds of material, like fabric or metal, and intertwine their strands into a braided style.

Snake – Snake chain bracelets feature links that are connected closely together, creating a kind of scaly appearance.

Wheat – Wheat chain bracelets use oval links twisted together to create a winding, textured look reminiscent of wheat.

Gemstone Bracelets

Gemstone bracelets are characterized by whichever kind of gemstones is used to make them. These can include diamond bracelets, such as tennis bracelets. Pearls remain popular, as do birthstone bracelets.

Bracelets can be used for almost any occasion, to dress up or down. The various types of bracelets make accessorizing easy and fun.
